Khaliya Top – Munsyari (Uttrakhand , India)

Day-3 – 7th April-2011

Munsyari – Khaliya Top (8 kms Trek)

So the trek started from altitude of 2656 mtrs and we carried on at an easy pace.Although it’s a small trek but compared to other treks which we have done this one was quite steep. The rain gods were also gearing up for the day’s quota as we moved on thru beautiful surroundings.

Our first target was to reach the under construction KMVN ; our guide ganga ram has made arrangements for us to stay overnight there. We were carrying sleeping bags as this KMVN has only walls and ceiling , nothing else.As we gained height we can see munsyari was left way below.

Soon the rain gods arrived and we were forced to take shelter under a tree.Another group was coming down and their guide , who was friend of ganga ram offered us tea , hot tea was the best thing at that time since it was getting pretty cold. As we enjoyed the tea the rain also subsidized. We carried on further and soon reached the KMVN site @ 1500 hrs.KMVN is located at almost 4 kms half way mark to Khaliya Top @ 3205 mtrs. The first thing you notice when you reach here is that this is a big KMVN considering the fact that all the material has to be carried up here.As we checked the surroundings , ganga ram prepared tea for everyone. After the tea , we left our sleeping bags and other stuff here and started our journey towards Khaliya Top.

The rain gods were in full mood to come down anytime. So we had to hurry. There were signs of snow here and there along the track now. After an hour we reached a point where there is a small temple.

Soon after the temple we saw the first view of the Khaliya Top and wow it’s snowed out on the top.The grassy meadow is called the Khaliya Bugyal and the top peak is Khaliya Top or Khaliya summit.

We kept enjoying the scene as we knew that we cannot reach the top in this weather. We thought no problems , we can come back tomorrow , but as we know plans are plans and nature has always few surprises up it’s sleeve. As we were enjoying the views , rain gods came in slowly but very steadily.

We ran for shelter under a big rock.Soon wind gods joined hands with rain gods and called upon snow as well , it was a perfect setting for a snow storm and we were in middle of it.

We waited under the rock for some time but soon we realized that this is not gonna improve soon.So what do we do , ganga ram suggested we should run back to KMVN.Ok , then lets run , and down we came running back to KMVN.We made it back KMVN in one piece though but with a problem and quite a serious one.The only clothes we brought were the one we were wearing and all of them had been washed , curtsey the rain gods. What to do now , if you have seen Man Vs wild you know what to do in such case.Take off all your clothes , let them dry beside fire.So off goes the clothes and we took shelter in sleeping bags.Me and Shobhit spent rest of the evening in sleeping bags , while mohit accompanied ganga ram with cooking.Thank god we had something good to eat ; Chicken and rice. The dinner was served around 2100 hrs and we all eat with trembling hands , chicken was really good but rain gods were still going gung ho and that made things cold , very very cold.Just after we were going to sleep Ganga ram came and announce that no one will be able to sleep as it’s very cold out here today ; his words kept repeating the entire night in our ears.He was right , it very cold and even inside the sleeping bag we could hardly get any sleep. That was the longest and coldest night I’ve ever experienced.Kept rolling in my sleeping bag till morning but no respite from biting cold. The entire night passed like this and soon it was time for solaris to rise again.
