Day – 3 – 31st March
Gharoli Pataal – Beedni Bugyaal – WAN – Lohajung – Tharali – Karanprayag – Rudraprayag
We woke up around 0600 hrs. After finishing up with the morning chores we had a cup of nice hot tea and some biscuits and headed towards Beedni Bugyaal. Gehroli Pataal to Beedni Bugyaal is only 3 kms but the accent is steep , add to that there were some sections with hardened snow where we needed to be more careful.
View of the Gehroli Pataal Campsite
After an hour or so we reached a place where there is a small temple. We took a small water break hear and some customary pics.
After a quick break we had to leave the normal track and climb straight up curtsey there was too much snow on the track and would have been risky. How much risky we will know for sure….much on that later lets first continue towards Beedni via a different route.
Mohit on his way up via different route
After about 30 mins we reached the top exhausted …….but the moment we looked around all that was gone. What we had in our front was just unbelievable sight…..words will not be able to explain the feeling we had there. I will let the pictures explain.

Some pose to remember …. I was here once
Ahhhh …an another one just remove the doubt that it was actually me
Mohit as well posing for the same reasons
After spending some time at the top it was now that we need to decide if we really want to go across the snow to the temple. First we thought it will be difficult to get down as there was snow all around .. on second thoughts we said let do it…why not….came so far and we are the first ones in this season to come here. So it was decided that we will go down to the Beedni Kund – the temple is beside kund.
But before we proceed there is one thing which was to be done for sure…..an education session on the surroundings we were looking at. Padam Singh our guide was good and he explained us all in detail. We carefully walked on the snow for first few steps. After getting the hang of snow it was easy.

We were at the kund in no time , offered prayers and soaked in the moment. We were happy that we came down as the views from here have a different perspective. Mohit decided that we should do the Parikrama of the Kund barefeet………….hmmmm I’said inside my head “ Now that sound’s like an brilliant idea” …..now tell me guys who in the world would not like to do that…….? I did’t wanted be in that list so I joined mohit in doing parikrama in snow barefoot. At first you feel like you are walking on broken glass but after while you cant feel anything and you carry on. The trick here is that if you have started don’t get off it until you are not planning to do ice walking again in some time , because if you do so it hurts twice as much as it did the first time , so take my words as a 1st hand experience.

Man Vs Mount Trishul – No Match
After all the hanging around and playing with snow it was time to head back , head back to the world of people , place where no snow is and place far opposite to where we are now.Now we had 2 options either we can go back the same way we came……that would mean climb back up to the top of Beedni Bugyaal and then steep decent from there till the small temple to join the actual track. Option 2 – we take the designated track full of snow. We choose the latter one and headed towards snow filled track.
Checking GPS for ALTITUDE as it read…..3528 mtrs
The track looked ok at first as Padam singh was ahead of us inspecting the route to take. At first we came to one tricky section but Padam singh was quite an expert at this , so he carved out few steps and we were fine. The second point was a bit long and was not as even Padam Singh expected…..the snow was hard as it was in shadow area of the hill…..the distance was long….and steep…..one slip and any of us will be history…..down long long below. No pics to describe what is was there…..hell you know why no pics…..we were rather thinking whether we will make it in one piece or not…who the hell thought we need to take picture.Padam Singh carefully treaded one step at a time …then carve one step in the snow with his long stick so that we can follow. It was a steep incline almost 45 degrees which we needed to climb and took us almost 30-45 mins to cover 100 mtrs alone. It was scarry …it was dangerous but it had to be done…there was no option to go back and take route 1…as that was far behind. After we crossed the final huddle…we sat on the rock…celebrated and thanked Nanda devi to help us make thru in one piece.
We reached the camp site @ Gehroli Pataal by 1130 hrs had our lunch and proceeded back to WAN.
The return trek was not so eventful as it was steep decent down and nothing new to be seen. We reached WAN road side 1400 hrs and took the same Bolero which we had hired for coming to WAN. Padam Singh had arranged our journey back to Lohajung. We reached Lohanjung @ 1600 hrs and immediately set for the return journey. The plan was to cover as much distance was we can today so that we reach Delhi tomorrow early. So we started off from Lohanjung towards Tharali , as we started the rain gods came down heavily……at first I thought what the hell….then I realized they were just coming down to congratulate us on successfully completing the first Beedni teck of 2013. As planned we headed from Tharali to Karanprayag and pushed on till Rudyaprayag. Settleled in a nice hotel at Rudraprayag for night and started next morning @ 0600 hrs from Rudraprayag to reach Delhi @ 1600 hrs.
Thank you for traveling with us.
Hope you enjoyed the journey as much as we did.CHEERS
